PRESS RELEASE: STUD FEE ALTERNATIVE ANNOUNCED FOR LEADING SIRE
SUANCES (GB)

December 28, 2009

Rancho Temescal (Piru, CA) is announcing an innovative option for California breeders to its leading sire SUANCES (GB). Breeders for the 2010 season may either pay the stud fee of $ 3,500 LF, or for the first 20 approved mares, the fee will be waived by naming Red Baron’s Barn as co-breeder (50%) on the resulting foal.

SUANCES (GB) was represented by his first crop of runners in 2008, a group that includes 2009 G2-Placed Stakes Winner, FEISTY SUANCES ($202,728), and average earnings per starter of more than $30,000 from two crops to race.

Suances filly breaks her maiden in front-running fashion
November 25, 2009

For California-bred Princess Suances, the third time proved to be the charm on November 25, when the 3-year-old Suances (GB) filly translated a front-running effort at Hollywood Park into a definitive maiden win in her third trip postward.

Making her first start in Inglewood following a seventh-place career debut at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in early August and a narrow second-place showing at Santa Anita Park in mid-October during the Oak Tree Racing Association meet, Princess Suances stretched out from the six-furlong distance of those two earlier races to a one-mile circuit and switched from the main-track synthetic racing surface to the turf.

Trainer Darrell Vienna’s tactics worked to perfection. Ridden by Hollywood leader Joel Rosario in the $38,400 maiden special weight test, the strapping sophomore filly broke eagerly from the outermost stall of the starting gate and encountered no serious threats from her five overmatched rivals as she posted internal fractions of :24.87, :48.72, 1:12.63 and 1:24.49 through the first seven furlongs. She reached the conclusion of the race under a hand ride in 1:36.16 while recording a 2 1/2-length margin of victory, and returned $4, $2.80 and $2.40 to her supporters as the even-money wagering favorite.

Bred and owned by Red Baron’s Barn, Princess Suances has banked $27,000 from her initial three starts. She is the first foal out of the unraced Dixie Union mare Princess Leela.

With four winners from his inaugural 10 starters, led by the Grade 2-placed stakes winner Feisty Suances, 12-year-old Suances holds court at Rancho Temescal in Piru, California. The Group 1-winning son of Most Welcome (GB) has cumulative progeny earnings of more than $290,000 from two crops to race.

Del Mar Stable Notes
July 29, 2009

SHORE LINES - .... Those who have followed the fortunes of trainer Darrell Vienna no doubt have noticed a number of young horses running for him with "Suances" in their names. That's right, they are progeny of one of his major runners this century, Suances, and they are all owned by Red Baron's Barn, which also owns Suances and stands him at Rancho Temescal in Piru, Calif. Vienna has 12 in the barn and says, "They're all runners, just like their dad." Suances won the Grade II San Francisco Breeders' Cup, defeating Decarchy, The Tin Man and Sarafan, and the Dallas Turf Cup at age 5 for Vienna and finished third in Del Mar's Wickerr Handicap at 6 behind Touchoftheblues and Inesperado ...

Suances runner makes it two in a row at Hollywood Park
July 11, 2009

Three-year-old Adam Suances stamped himself as an up-and-coming horse to watch on July 11, when he captured his second consecutive outing at Hollywood Park, thereby becoming the second multiple winner to hail from the initial crop of runners sired by the California stallion Suances (GB).

The Darrell Vienna-trained gelding, who broke his maiden after a nearly 13-month layoff in a local 6 1/2-furlong claiming contest on June 18, turned in three bullet works over the Santa Anita Park training track following that race in preparation for his third lifetime start. Partnered again with jockey Martin Pedroza and installed at odds of 2-1 for the 6 1/2-furlong starter allowance, Adam Suances stalked the pacesetter through the opening half-mile from a running position along the rail, gained the advantage in midstretch and pulled away to a 1 1/4-length victory in 1:16.06.

Adam Suances collected $19,140 for the effort to push his total earnings to $31,440. He was bred in California by his owner, Red Baron’s Barn, and produced by Carbon Copy (GB), a winning daughter of Pivotal (GB).

A Group 1 winner in France and Grade 2 winner in the United States, Suances currently holds court at Rancho Temescal in Piru. The 12-year-old Most Welcome (GB) sire is credited with progeny earnings of $241,320 from two crops to race, led by the Grade 2-placed stakes winner Feisty Suances.

It’s back-to-back winners at Hollywood Park for Suances
June 19, 2009

Just one day after Adam Suances became the second winner for Suances (GB) , the California-based stallion was represented by another successful runner from his initial crop when Suances de Espana also broke her maiden at Hollywood Park for the same connections.

The 3-year-old filly, a homebred runner for Jed Cohen’s Red Baron’s Barn, was making her career debut in a 5 1/2-furlong test on the Inglewood oval’s all-weather Cushion Track surface on June 19. Like her cropmate, Adam Suances, she entered the race off a series of works over Santa Anita Park’s dirt training track for conditioner Darrell Vienna, and was partnered with veteran rider Martin Pedroza.

Facing eight other starters, including two of her elders, Suances de Espana stalked the pace from the outside, made her bid between horses on the turn and outlasted the eventual runner-up in a determined stretch battle that resulted in her one-length victory. She was clocked in 1:04.58 for the distance, and returned a $9 win ticket as the 7-2 second wagering choice. Although she was eligible to be claimed for $25,000, she returned to her own stall after having her photo taken in the winner’s circle.

The California-bred filly is the first foal out of the stakes-placed winner Estrada, by Mutakddim. She earned $9,000 for her first foray as a racehorse.

Suances, a Group 1 winner in France and Grade 2 winner in Northern California, holds court at Rancho Temescal in Piru. The 12-year-old Most Welcome (GB) stallion is represented by progeny earnings of $222,180 from two crops to race.

Suances gelding provides comeback for injured jockey
June 18, 2009

When Adam Suances outran 10 contenders in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden claiming test at Hollywood Park on June 18, it marked a successful return to the races for both the gelding and his jockey. Unraced in nearly 13 months, the Suances (GB) sophomore carried journeyman Martin Pedroza to the winner’s circle for the first time since the rider was hospitalized with a broken pelvis five months earlier.

A California-bred runner from his sire’s initial crop, Adam Suances had been sidelined since he ran seventh in his debut at Golden Gate Fields in May 2008. Although he had turned in a series of comeback works over the dirt training track at Santa Anita Park since April, he was ignored by most handicappers when he went to post for his second career start, and offered steep odds of 17-1 while running for a $35,000 claiming price.

Pedroza put his mount into contention early, pushing the pacesetter from second through the first half-mile before assuming the lead in the stretch. Once clear, the duo rallied to a three-length victory in 1:16.62, giving the 43-year-old jockey his first win back just one week after he returned to the irons following a post parade incident last January.

Adam Suances is campaigned by his breeder, Red Baron’s Barn, and conditioned by Darrell Vienna. He is the first foal out of the winning Pivotal (GB) mare Carbon Copy (GB), and has banked $12,300 to date.

Twelve-year-old Suances, a European champion and second-crop sire by Most Welcome (GB), stands at Rancho Temescal in Piru, California.

Golden Gate Fields
'Suances' goes wire-to-wire in Sullivan
Larry Stumes, Special to The Chronicle

Sunday, May 3, 2009 (05-02) 20:37 PDT -- Call Saturday's $75,000 Silky Sullivan Stakes at Golden Gate Fields the anti-Kentucky Derby. Instead of a 50-to-1 shot coming from last place to win like what happened at Churchill Downs, a 2-to-5 favorite led from start to finish.

Feisty Suances, who had been knocking heads with Kentucky Derby participants Pioneerof the Nile, Chocolate Candy and Mr. Hot Stuff, towered over his four opponents class-wise in Saturday's 11/16-mile race restricted to California-breds.

It also didn't hurt that the rainy weather forced the race from the turf to the main track, because Feisty Suances never had run on grass.

After recovering quickly from tenderness in his feet that forced him to be scratched from the $250,000 Snow Chief Stakes on April 25 at Hollywood Park, Feisty Suances actually had a chance to run in the Kentucky Derby.

"We got a call from Churchill Downs on Tuesday that we would have had a berth in the derby," said Tim Cohen, whose father, Jed, owns and bred Feisty Suances through his Red Baron's Barn. "But you've got to do right for the horse."

Jed Cohen also received a call from jockey Kyle Kaenel, who recently moved from Golden Gate Fields to Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa. Kaenel asked to ride Feisty Suances in the Sullivan Stakes.

"He called the farm and talked to my father," Tim Cohen said. "He had been following the stallion (the sire Suances) and knew a lot about the horse. He was very knowledgeable, so we gave him the call."

Kaenel ranked 10th in the Golden Gate Fields jockey standings with 20 winners from 199 mounts when he left two weeks ago. He also added a victory in Saturday's sixth race aboard maiden-claimer Club Bombay.

"I was not happy with how my business was going here, and I looked at several different tracks," Kaenel said. "There were some opportunities at Prairie Meadows, and it's a short meeting that feeds into other tracks in Kentucky and Illinois, or I could come back here. It could be a stepping stone for me."

In Saturday's race, Feisty Suances shook off a challenge from Royal Mango on the backstretch and spurted away from the rest of the field at the top of the stretch to win by 4 lengths.

"I could have put 3 lengths on them in two jumps if I wanted to," Kaenel said. "He tells you when to go instead of you having to tell him."

Crown hopes bloom for Feisty Suances
By Steve Andersen

ARCADIA, Calif. - Feisty Suances is getting closer to a start in a Triple Crown race with each passing week.

On March 14, Feisty Suances finished second to heavy favorite Pioneerof the Nile in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes, his first start in a graded stakes. Friday, owner Jed Cohen paid a $6,000 nomination fee to make Feisty Suances eligible for the Triple Crown.

Saturday, Feisty Suances can justify that investment when he starts in the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby against three of the top 3-year-olds in California - Chocolate Candy, Pioneerof the Nile, and The Pamplemousse.

Cohen already knows where he will be if Feisty Suances pulls an upset in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby.

"If he wins, the interviews will be in the intensive care unit," he said.

Cohen and trainer Darrell Vienna are not thinking of the Kentucky Derby, at least not this week. Cohen is more interested in starting Feisty Suances in the $250,000 Snow Chief Stakes for statebred 3-year-olds at Hollywood Park on April 25 and then considering a start in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 16.

The Santa Anita Derby remains the immediate goal. Bred in California by Cohen's Red Baron's Barn, Feisty Suances has won 3 of 6 starts and $124,820. He is by Suances, a stallion that Cohen stands.

Feisty Suances won his first three starts - a maiden claimer, a starter allowance and an allowance race for statebreds last year. But he has lost his last three starts - a second in the California Breeders' Champion Stakes in December, a fourth in the California Derby in January, and the runner-up finish in the San Felipe.

Feisty Suances emerged from the California Derby loss with a minor leg injury and started in the San Felipe at less than full fitness, Cohen said.

"We had to back off on him," Cohen said. "We weren't disgraced by having lost to [Pioneerof the Nile] by a length and a quarter under those circumstances."

Thursday, Feisty Suances worked a half-mile in 48.40 seconds.

"Darrell said he worked very well and this morning's report is that you wouldn't know he did anything," Cohen said Friday.

Feisty Suances is one of five probable starters in the Santa Anita Derby, which is run over 1 1/8 miles. Jockey Victor Espinoza has the mount on Feisty Suances, replacing David Flores, who will ride out of town on Saturday.

The Santa Anita Derby field also is expected include Mr. Hot Stuff, who was third behind The Pamplemousse in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes on Feb. 28. Bob Baffert, who trains Pioneerof the Nile, is considering starting Life Goes On, who won a maiden special weight race over a mile on March 19.

Gallant Son, a four-time stakes winner, is a candidate for the Santa Anita Derby or the Illinois Derby at Hawthorne on the same day. Gallant Son won three stakes at Emerald Downs last summer and fall and his turf debut in the Pasadena Stakes here on March 15.

Regardless of how Feisty Suances runs in the Santa Anita Derby, he has come along way since winning a $40,000 claiming race for maidens last September.

"Isn't that something?" Cohen said. "He's not going to disgrace us. He's getting better. Who knows?"

Cal-bred Suances colt runs game second in G2 San Felipe

California-bred Feisty Suances, a colt from the first crop of European champion Suances (GB) , gave the decorated Kentucky Derby (G1) hopeful Pioneer of the Nile a run for his money on March 14, when he came within 1 1/4 lengths of the Grade 1 winner in Santa Anita Park’s $200,000 San Felipe Stakes (G2).

A stakes-placed colt who won three of four starts during his 2008 juvenile campaign, Feisty Suances entered the 1 1/16-mile San Felipe off a fourth-place effort in Golden Gate Fields’ $100,000 California Derby, which was contested at the same distance on January 17 and marked his 2009 debut.

Reunited with regular rider David Flores at Santa Anita and sent postward at odds of 11-1 for his second start as a 3-year-old, the colt maintained an early running position along the rail behind pacesetter New Bay, shifted outside the tiring front-runner in the second turn and ran on willingly to the wire, which he ultimately reached a length in front of third-place finisher Jeranimo.

Feisty Suances’ runner-up finish in the 72nd edition of the San Felipe places him along elite company; among the other notable runners to finish second in this race over the past 30 years were subsequent Kentucky Derby winners Giacomo (2005), Real Quiet (1998), Silver Charm (1997), Alysheba (1987) and Gato Del Sol (1982).

The Darrell Vienna trainee, who also ran second in Santa Anita’s $125,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes last December, has compiled a six-race record of three wins and two placings, and earnings of $124,820. Produced by the winning Good and Tough mare Good and Hot, he is campaigned by his breeder, Red Baron’s Barn.

Twelve-year-old Suances, a Group 1 winner and French highweight at 3, currently stands at Rancho Temescal   in Piru, California. The Most Welcome (GB) stallion was represented by his first crop of runners in 2008.

Suances' top earner ends juvenile season with stakes placing
2-year-old Feisty Suances entered the 69th edition of the $125,000 California Breeders' Champion Stakes undefeated from three starts and as the 3-1 wagering favorite. Although the Suances (GB) colt did not emerge with a victory on opening day of Santa Anita Park's 2008/2009 Winter/Spring Meet, he was game in defeat, finishing a stubborn second in his stakes debut after battling for the lead throughout the seven-furlong test.

A dual winner during the local Oak Tree Racing Association meet last autumn and an allowance winner at Hollywood Park in late November, Feisty Suances had never been headed prior to the historic Cal Breeders' race. Partnered with regular rider David Flores, he got involved with a speed duel, running a close second through opening fractions of :22.75, :44.80 and 1:09.03. At the eighth pole, he managed to put his tiring main rival away while briefly sticking his head in front of the 12-horse field, but he was passed late by the surging All Saint and ultimately finished a length behind that winning rival at the wire. The final time on Pro-Ride was 1:22.07.

Bred and campaigned by Red Baron's Barn and conditioned by Darrell Vienna, Feisty Suances brought his four-race earnings to $78,820 with his runner-up check. The California-bred colt was produced by the winner Good and Hot, by Good and Tough.

Group 1 winner Suances stands at Rancho Temescal www.ranchotemescal.com in Piru, California. The 11-year-old Most Welcome (GB) stallion is represented by his first crop of runners in 2008.

First-crop Suances colt remains unbeaten and untested
California-bred Feisty Suances kept his three-race record pristine on November 23, when he dominated a 7 1/2-furlong allowance race at Hollywood Park from flag fall to finish.

The official race comments for the front-running, 2-year-old son of Suances (GB) all read the same: "ridden out". A two-time winner during the 2008 Oak Tree Racing Association meet at Santa Anita Park — first at 6 1/2 furlongs in September, then at one mile in October - Feisty Suances took his A-game with him across town to Inglewood for his third consecutive victory under partner David Flores.

The Red Baron’s Barn homebred broke first from the gate, shot to an early lead and proved much the best under a steady hand ride, spurning his four rivals with a 1 1/4-length triumph in 1:28.61 over CushionTrack. As the first foal out of the winning Good and Tough mare Good and Hot, he has earned $53,820 under the tutelage of trainer Darrell Vienna.

Suances, an 11-year-old son of Most Welcome (GB) who captured a Group 1 race in France and a Grade 2 race in the United States, resides at Rancho Temescal in Piru, California. His first-crop progeny earnings currently stand at $58,980, with the lion’s share attributed to his undefeated colt. - November 23, 2008 Suances stood the 2008 season at Rancho Temescal in Piru.

October 25
Suances Colt Still Unbeaten, Unheaded
After the first two races of his blossoming career, Feisty Suances still has to taste defeat and still has to pursue another horse.

The 2-year-old son of freshman sire Suances (GB) won his second consecutive wire-to-wire victory when he scored by 5 3/4 lengths Thursday at Santa Anita, following a two-length triumph on September 25 in his first career start.

After winning at 6 1/2 furlongs in his debut, Feisty Suances stretched out to one mile Thursday and performed even more impressively, holding a half-length lead through the backstretch, then kicking clear turning for home to pull away by three lengths before almost doubling that lead in the stretch under a hand ride by David Flores.

Feisty Suances, whose earnings total $30,420, is the first winner from three starters from the first crop of Suances, a champion in France and a Grade 2 winner in the United States.

Feisty Suances was bred by his owner, Red Baron's Barn LLC, and is trained by Darrell Vienna. His dam is Good and Hot, by Good and Tough.
